You may have seen a very cryptic message on Facebook from Erica regarding a gift card giveaway with Tin Drum and our life update. So if you haven’t already guessed it, we wanted to let you know what’s going on with us.
We are moving to Thailand next week.
On July 28th, Erica and I are packing up our belongings and moving to the other side of the earth. Why? How? What will you do when you’re there? How will you make money? Do you speak the language? Are you rich or something? How long will you stay? Chances are at least one of these questions crossed your mind. We know because we’ve heard them all. I’ll answer all of those at some point but I’m going to first start with why we made this decision.
A couple years ago, Erica and I lived in Old Fourth Ward with a wonderful view of the skyline. We entertained our friends at our apartment regularly, dined out nearly every weekend (which is why we started the blog) and worked tirelessly to make enough money to live the lifestyle that we wanted.
We saw the path that our lives were taking us: go to college, graduate, get a job, marry your high school sweetheart, buy a house, have kids, retire, die. But, we quickly realized the proverbial “American dream” wasn’t for us. We wanted more out of life than the predictability of it all. We knew there was more to life than making money. We wanted to travel more than just two weeks out of the year. We wanted to experience new cultures and see new places. We wanted to feel alive.
We spent this past year considering different avenues to see if we could make this fantasy of exploring the world a reality. We took steps to make this happen, and next week, our dream will come to fruition. This is not a vacation; this is our new lifestyle. Most people consider this unfathomable which is why we’ll document our experience in its entirety. Working a traditional 9 to 5 job until retirement scares us more than diving headfirst into an unknown experience in Thailand. So we are outta here.
What does this mean for “A Taste of Our City”? Atlanta will always be our city, and for right now, we’ll continue to update you on where you should eat and drink. We’ll also continue to chronicle our travel updates, too. However, Chiang Mai will be our new city for a while. We’re excited to take you with us on our food and travel adventures there. By documenting it, we hope to not only dispel myths about living in other countries but also inspire people to live the lifestyle they want to live, no matter the circumstances.
